I recently went to Adam's lab where they work with leaf packs. Then, earlier I went to Dr. Anita Antoninka's lab where they work with biocrust. These labs are both located at NAU. What they study is very EXCITING, please read on!!!!!!!!!!!!! At Dr.Anita's lab they are researching lichens, mosses and cyanobacteria. They are looking specifically at the ones that make up biocrusts. They look at the ecology of of the organisms researched. Also, researched is how they can be used in restoration of degraded drylands. I saw some other projects such as how to transfer grown moss. They were using burlap to see if it helped because after a while it will disintegrate. At Adams lab they are working with leaf packs. They are looking to see how ENERGY moves through a food web in aquatic ecosystems. They are doing this by looking at how different leaf species function as resources for different aquatic insects. They are also grinding up aquatic insect to see the isotopes contained in their bodies. I hope that this post showed you a little more about how fun science can be! I'm Lichen It!AuthorHello, I am Michal Swanson. I am a student at Northland Preparatory Academy and I will be blogging about the Lichen project our school is participating in to learn more about climate change over a period of 10 years. I am 13 years old. I transferred from BASIS last September. I LOVE the outdoors, gardening, reading, and science. My favorite color is GREEN. I want to become a biologist or ecologist when I grow up. Science is in my blood. My mother is a Chemist, my uncle a biologist, my aunt a nurse, and my great-grandmother an amazing gardener who can grow just about anything anywhere. I am really interested in microbiology. Last year I did an experiment for the science fair on how oregano oil kills bacteria . I would like to do an oregano oil 2.0 experiment on how oregano oil PREVENTS the growth of bacteria. Lichen is small and very interesting to me and I am ECSTATIC to be writing up posts to share this topic with you. Archives
